A stop off in Colombo is commonly the starter or finisher to any trip around Sri Lanka and therefore comes hand in hand with easy, no fuss and affordable accommodation. We chose to end our trip here to see what the city had to offer and for a while I was looking for cheap hotels amongst the chaos not finding the perfect spot. By chance, I stumbled upon Srilax on Instagram and booked it straight away.
Srilax is a cafe with rooms vibe, which is something we opted for as often as we could around Sri Lanka, staying away from big commercial properties. This place offers five rooms above a popular cafe called Cafe Kumbuk which is situated down a quiet side street near the Cinnamon Gardens area.
We took a train from the South beaches up to Colombo and jumped in a tuk tuk to took us straight to the cafe. We got there just in time for the workers to be there but if you arrive after hours or come and go once there, you can help yourself with a key box and secure access. The road which it is on is a small side street with a dead end so it’s quiet and feels very safe.
We had a double bedroom which was very spacious, comes with a good shower, hanging rail, access to the balcony and rooftop for watching the sun go down. The bed is very comfortable and the air conditioning is crisp – which was amazing after a sweaty day strolling the city!
Just downstairs is the lovely cafe and a gift shop with some local artisan crafts. We didn’t have breakfast included but you get 10% off your order when staying there. The location of this place is great, it’s in a modern and clean part of the city so you can stroll around and enjoy the area. You will need to get a tuk tuk to the Pettah market area but it was a lot cheaper than expected! You can also walk to the coastline by Galle Face, it takes about 30 minutes to get there.
Overall, I’m so happy I found this place and if I ever find myself back in Colombo I would definitely stay again. At only £30 a night, you can’t go wrong!
